The guys from Om Nom Nom started sharing their snacks with friends and acquaintances in order to see how their pets reacted to them, and the snacks were a roaring success.

It was then when they came up with the idea of increasing the production and offering their products to a wider public.

They cooked muffins, cookies and cakes, and put them on the market via Facebook, in fairs and in different events.

In one of those fairs, I run into them, and since we knew each other from a previous job, we chatted for a while.
They told me about their project and products, and I bought them some snacks for mi cat Dimitri.

When I got home and gave Dimitri the snacks, he loved them (even though he has a quite demanding palate). So I thought how great It was to have a healthy alternative for pets food, with balanced ingredients and also based on organic products.
But when I went to throw the packaging away, I realised that the polypropylene bags that they used to pack the products, although they were probably the best option to conserve the snacks, wasn’t consistent with their ideology and the kind of products they offered.
So I contacted them and suggested working on a biodegradable packaging , environmentally friendly and, why not, more attractive for the customers. The guys told me that they had been looking for something like that, but they could not find any packaging of those characteristics at an affordable price, so they accepted right away.

I started thinking ideas, making prototypes and sketching designs, and a few days later we met with different models to cut, fold and paste, in order to see which shapes and volumes where the ones that adapted better to the products.
Once defined the necessary size and volume for each package, I moved on with the design process.

The first that I defined was the type of substrate that I wanted to use. Kraft paper seemed the most appropriate, since it’s a rustic paper obtained form mechanical processes, with no chemical bleaching and without many additives. The characteristics of the paper are consistent with Om Nom Nom stance, and with the kind of products that they offer.
Once the substrate was defined, I started working on the shape of the packaging. Although we could have made a bag with the brand on it, in this case I had the freedom to try out and experiment with different layouts and ideas, and that’s what I did.
Putting myself in the position of a customer, I started thinking what kind of product presentation would be more attractive. Just like the guys from Om Nom Nom, I have pets and I love pets, so why not making packs with animal shapes? Taking into account that the variety of products with sustained demand was relatively delimited, we could try out a type of packaging adapted to every kind of product.
So I started trying packs layouts with cat and dog shape.

In the first mockups, I included a die cutting with acetate in order to show the product. However, we weren’t fond of including plastic materials into the packaging, and it also made the process more complex, so as we had more cons than pros, we decided to discard the die cutting.
Afterwards, we tried and improved the shapes, the folding and the assembly of the packs until we got the final product.
I added additional information in the reverse and the bottom of the packaging (like the flavour of the snacks, the date of manufacture and the storage conditions), and then we had the final version of the packaging for the cookies.

As for the muffins, I used a higher weight of paper in order to obtain rigid boxes.
Since the muffins are both for cats and dogs, I decided to make one side of the packaging for each species, including the additional information in the upper side and the underside.
Once we were happy with the results, we started the production of the packaging.
